Where Does Pure Planet Energy Come From?
Pure Planet’s electricity comes from 100% renewable energy sources and their gas supply is 100% carbon offset fossil fuel. However, they currently do not offer green gas.
To better understand the green energy they supply, it is important to break down the Pure Planet energy mix. Let's have a look!
We classify Pure Planet energy as one of the UK’s semi-green energy suppliers as their gas supply is sourced from fossil fuels.
In the UK all suppliers are required by law to report the sources of energy they use for their electricity supply. In the case of Pure Planet, their electricity supply comes from 100% renewable energy sources. More specifically, Pure Planet’s electricity fuel mix is derived from 11% solar energy and 80% wind energy with small amounts of hydroelectric power mixed in.
While this clearly shows that Pure Planet is a green energy supplier, the company has been mixed up in a defamation case brought on by Which?, who expressed doubt about its true origins. This is because Pure Planet purchases all of its energy through Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates, as it is not an electricity generator.
REGO certificates are certificates authenticating energy from renewable sources. While some companies take advantage of a loophole in the REGO’s system to greenwash their energy, REGO’s are a valid way for companies that do not generate their own energy to purchase green energy for resale. The perfect example of this is Pure Planet.
Pure Planet serves green energy backed by REGO certificates, and all of our research shows that Pure Planet really does supply green electricity. Therefore as a customer of Pure Planet, you can rest assured that the electricity you use comes from 100% renewable energy sources.
Now that you know you'll be getting green energy, let's take a look at what others have to say about the company.
Pure Planet Reviews
Pure Planet energy has received multiple awards in recent years.
In 2020, the Sunday Times ranked Pure Planet number 2 in a list of the “Top 100 Small Companies” of the year. This was followed by Which? ranking Pure Panet number 2 in its list of the “Best Energy Providers” for 2021, and then the UK Employee Experience Awards giving Pure Planet a Gold Award as “Best Company to Work for in 2021”.
While not all of these awards may translate directly into customer satisfaction, these awards clearly show where Pure Planet Energy’s values lie, which is a major plus in our book.
However, all of this begs the question, “Is Pure Planet really a good energy supplier?”
Let’s take a look at Pure Planet reviews around the web to see what real customers have to say about the green provider.
In the annual Survey of Energy Suppliers by Which?, 91% of customers surveyed mentioned that they had no problems with Pure Planet within the last year. Customers also gave them 5 stars for their billing accuracy.
Pure Planet reviews also showed customers gave them an average of 4 out of 5 stars for the perception of “value for the money” and clarity of energy bills received.
Pure Planet Pros & Cons
Pros of Pure Planet
- 100% renewable electricity
- Supplier is Highly Rated
- Carbon Offset Gas
Cons of Pure Planet
- Online-Only Support
- Expensive Tariffs
- 100% Fossil Fuel Gas
This all sounds amazing, but what about Pure Planet reviews for customer service? After all, Pure Planet is an online-only company. How does this affect customer service in the event of an issue?
For this, we took a look at Trustpilot to see what customers said about the supplier. In terms of customer service, Pure Planet reviews were mixed. Some customers praised Pure Planet for their communication saying:
I can honestly say that as well as their really good tariffs they have so far been brilliant in regards to customer service. -Gwynneth
Never had an issue with them they have great communication ignore the bad reviews those people must be technophobes. -Harry
However other Pure Planet reviews showed some customers weren’t so happy, mentioning trouble with the online-only service as all contact takes place via the internet.
Terrible communication if you need help or support. Emails get unanswered or take days/weeks to respond. -Marina
From these Pure Planet energy reviews, we understand that if you are a customer who likes being able to speak to a live person about your energy account via local office or telephone, then Pure Planet may not be the right choice for you.
Let’s take a look and see how Pure Planet tariffs stack up in terms of price and value for the money.
Pure Planet Tariffs
Depending on what you are looking for, the supplier has two different Pure Planet tariffs on offer:
- Pure Planet Fixed Rate Tariff
- Pure Planet Variable Tariff
There is a fixed rate tariff for customers who prefer to enter into a contract with a fixed unit rate and standing charges, and then, there is a variable tariff for customers who prefer to follow the market and let their rates change as market prices fluctuate. If you choose the Pure Planet variable tariff, Pure Planet guarantees your starting rates won't change for 2 months as an added benefit.
Both Pure Planet tariffs are valid options depending on your individual needs, however, as Pure Planet offers fossil fuel gas we recommend choosing a fixed rate tariff as you are guaranteed to receive the same rates for the duration of your contract and will be protected against volatile market fluctuations.
However, regardless of the tariff you choose, all Pure Planet tariffs come with zero exit fees. This means that if you decide you would like to change suppliers for any reason whatsoever, you are free to change without having to pay exit fees to leave the contract.
Zero exit fees is a major benefit versus other suppliers and this is normally a condition you have to pay more for to add to your contract. However, Pure Planet tariffs offer it for free!
Lastly, in Selectra's most recent review of Pure Planet tariffs, we compared the company’s cheapest tariff on offer to the October 2021 Price cap and found that the cheapest of Pure Planet tariffs worked out to be 24% higher than the Ofgem price cap and was the most expensive green energy tariff out of all of the ones reviewed in our green energy suppliers comparison.
This means that while you will be receiving green energy and helping fight global warming with your Pure Planet tariffs, you will also be paying through the nose. Therefore, Pure Planet may not be the best choice if you are looking to reduce your energy bill.
