What is recycling?

Recycling is the process of collecting used or discarded materials — glass, paper, cardboard, metal, plastic — sorting them, and transforming them into new raw materials that are then used to manufacture new products. It gives waste a second life while saving natural resources, energy and greenhouse gas emissions compared with production from virgin materials.

Every recycled bottle, can or newspaper means fewer raw materials extracted, less energy burned and fewer greenhouse gases released. That makes sorting your waste one of the simplest everyday actions to reduce your carbon footprint.

The 3 steps of recycling

Whatever the material, recycling always follows the same three-step loop:

  1. 1
    Collection and sorting: waste is collected (kerbside bins, bottle banks, recycling centres, in-store take-back points) and separated by material at a sorting facility.
  2. 2
    Processing: each material is cleaned and turned back into a raw material — glass is crushed into cullet and melted, paper is pulped and de-inked, metals are shredded and smelted, plastics are washed and pelletised.
  3. 3
    Remanufacturing: the recycled material is used to make new products — bottles, cans, packaging, textiles, car parts — closing the loop.

The 3 Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle

Recycling is only the third-best option in the waste hierarchy. The "3 Rs" rank what to do with anything you no longer need:

  • Reduce: the best waste is the waste that is never produced! Buying less, avoiding over-packaged products and planning food shopping — checking use-by dates properly — cuts waste at the source;
  • Reuse: repairing, donating, reselling or repurposing objects extends their life — the logic behind second-hand shopping and the sharing economy;
  • Recycle: once the first two options are exhausted, sorting correctly ensures the material actually gets a second life.

What can be recycled? Material by material

Most everyday waste now has a dedicated recycling or recovery route — with very different performance from one material to another. Other items have dedicated take-back routes rather than a kerbside bin: batteries (collection points in supermarkets), electricals and electronics (retailers and recycling centres — look for the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol), furniture, mattresses, paint and light bulbs are all accepted free of charge at household waste recycling centres. What do the recycling symbols mean?

Recyclable or not? Packaging carries a jungle of logos, and several of them do not mean what most people think. Here are the symbols that actually carry a recycling instruction:

Möbius loop Möbius loop recycling symbol The universal recycling symbol: the item is technically recyclable — it will only actually be recycled if your local authority collects it. With a percentage in the centre, it shows how much recycled content the product contains.
OPRL "Recycle" label The UK's on-pack label, a simple binary: "Recycle" or "Don't Recycle". "Recycle" means at least 75% of UK councils collect that packaging at kerbside; "Don't Recycle" means fewer than 50% do, or the material cannot be effectively reprocessed.
Resin codes 1-7 A number in a triangle of arrows identifying the plastic type: 1 PET (bottles), 2 HDPE (milk jugs), 3 PVC, 4 LDPE (films), 5 PP (pots and tubs), 6 PS (polystyrene), 7 others. It identifies the resin — it does NOT guarantee the item is recyclable locally. Codes 1 and 2 are the most widely recycled.
Crossed-out wheelie bin (WEEE) Found on electricals, electronics and batteries: never put these in household bins. They must go to a separate collection point (retailer take-back or recycling centre) to recover metals and avoid fire risks.

Beware of the false friends! Two very common logos carry no recycling instruction at all:

Recycling in the UK and worldwide: key figures

The UK recycled 44.6% of waste from households in 2023, up from 44.1% in 2022, according to official Defra statistics. Behind the average, performance varies widely across the four nations — and even more from one material to another:

Worldwide, the picture is more sobering. According to the OECD Global Plastics Outlook, only 9% of plastic waste is ultimately recycled: 19% is incinerated, around 50% goes to landfill and 22% ends up in uncontrolled dumps or the environment. Plastic production, meanwhile, has doubled since 2000 to 460 million tonnes a year. On the food side, WRAP estimates UK households still throw away around 6.4 million tonnes of food a year — most of which could have been eaten.

Simpler Recycling: what changed in England in 2025-2026

For decades, what you could recycle at kerbside depended entirely on your postcode — and bin colours still vary from one council to the next. That confusion is what England's Simpler Recycling reform is designed to end.

For households: the same core materials everywhere

Since 31 March 2026, every local authority in England must collect the same core recyclable streams from every household, according to the government announcement:

  • dry recyclables: glass, metal, plastic, and paper and card — collected from all homes, whichever council you live under;
  • food waste: collected weekly in a dedicated caddy, then turned into compost or biogas through anaerobic digestion;
  • garden waste: available on request, where transitional arrangements do not apply.

The rollout is not perfectly uniform: some councils with long-running waste contracts have transitional arrangements allowing a later start, particularly for weekly food waste rounds. Bin colours also remain a local choice — the material list is standardised, not the paintwork — so keep checking your council's guidance or the Recycle Now locator for what goes where in your area. Businesses and other non-household premises with 10 or more employees have had to separate the same streams since 31 March 2025.

For producers: packaging polluters now pay

The second pillar of the reform is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging: since October 2025, the companies that place packaging on the UK market — not council taxpayers — pay the cost of collecting and processing it, a transfer of roughly £1.4 billion a year. From 2026, fees are modulated by recyclability, so a producer pays more for hard-to-recycle packaging. The aim: make eco-design cheaper than waste.

Why recycle? Benefits — and honest limits

The benefits of recycling

Recycling delivers three concrete environmental wins:

  • it saves energy: making products from recycled material almost always uses less energy than from raw material — up to 95% less for aluminium, about a third less for glass;
  • it cuts emissions: lower energy use and avoided extraction mean fewer greenhouse gases, a direct lever against global warming;
  • it reduces landfill and extraction: every tonne recycled is a tonne neither buried, burned, nor freshly mined, drilled or logged.

The limits: recycling is not a magic fix

Recycling alone will not solve the waste problem. Most plastics undergo downcycling: each cycle degrades the material, so a bottle becomes textile fibre, then stuffing, before ending up incinerated — only glass and metals recycle endlessly. Globally, just 9% of plastic waste actually gets recycled, whatever the logo on the pack suggests. And beware of wish-cycling: tossing non-recyclable items in the recycling bin "just in case" contaminates entire loads and can send genuinely recyclable material to landfill. When in doubt, check — do not guess.

The priority therefore remains reduction at the source: less packaging, more reuse, and rigorous sorting for whatever cannot be avoided.

Towards a circular economy

Recycling is one link in the circular economy, a model that breaks with the linear "take, make, throw away" pattern by keeping materials in use as long as possible: eco-design first, then repair and reuse, with recycling as the last resort. Sorting your waste properly is one of the simplest daily habits to shrink your carbon footprint.
