Is Good Energy Actually Green?
Good Energy is one of the UK’s strongest green energy suppliers serving renewable energy to around 250,000 customers across the UK.
Naturally, the question at top-of-mind when we think of green energy is, “Is it actually green?” In Good Energy’s case, the answer is a resounding “YES!”.
Although its energy may not be vegan like Ecotricity's energy, Good Energy serves truly green energy to all its customers. This means that regardless of the Good Energy tariff you choose you can expect to receive 100% green electricity.
While Good Energy doesn’t have much green gas to supply its customers, it does supplement 10% of its gas supply from biogas or green gas. This is far above the current industry average, making Good Energy tariffs a real contender in the green energy retail market.
Good Energy Tariffs Are Green
All Good Energy tariffs supply green energy that is responsibly sourced.
Good Energy sources its power directly from contracts with independent renewable energy generators. This is different from other green energy suppliers that source their energy from mixed sources on the wholesale energy market.
These often contain a mix of fossil fuel, nuclear and renewable energy that is labelled as green energy through the use of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates For more on this, read our article on greenwashing).
If you choose a Good Energy tariff for your gas supply as well, the company will supply you with carbon offset fossil fuel gas. However, 10% of this comes from green gas or biogas.
Below, we are going to dive into the different Good Energy tariffs on offer to help you better understand what’s available and if any of the Good Energy tariffs could be suitable for you.

Good Energy Tariffs in Detail
There are several different Good Energy tariffs, depending on the needs of your household.
Good Energy works to make its tariff offerings flexible to adapt to the needs of your family.
The following Good Energy tariffs are available to choose from:
Good Energy recently stopped offering its heat pump tariff.
Fixed-Rate Good Energy Tariff
If you are looking for Good Energy tariffs that leave your unit rates and standing charges fixed, then their fixed rate tariff is the best option.
Many people mistake fixed-rate tariffs for meaning a fixed price on your monthly bill. However, with fixed-rate tariffs, your monthly bill changes based on your usage, but the price you pay for each unit of energy you use remains the same.
The name of the standard Good Energy tariff with a fixed rate is: Good To Fix
The Good To Fix tariff is a 2-year fixed tariff meaning that your unit rates and standing charges are guaranteed to remain the same for 24 months from the start of your contract.
All Good Energy tariffs come with zero exit fees which allow you to end the contract and change supplier at any time without being charged a penalty fee.
The Good To Fix tariff can only be paid by direct debit. Unfortunately, this means that only customers with standard credit meters or a Good Energy smart meter can take advantage of this Good Energy tariff.
If you have a prepayment or top-up meter, you will want to take a look at the next section on Good Energy’s variable tariff.
Variable Rate Good Energy Tariff
Good Energy’s Variable rate tariff is a solid option for customers who do not have a credit meter but want to purchase a Good Energy tariff for sustainability reasons.
A variable-rate tariff is a type of tariff with unit rates and standing charges that fluctuate according to the market price of energy. These tariffs tend to be more expensive in the long run and can be susceptible to price spikes when the price of energy rises globally.
The name of the variable-rate Good Energy tariff is simply: Good Energy Standard Variable Tariff
As with all Good Energy tariffs, the standard variable tariff offers customers zero exit fees allowing you to switch suppliers at any time without penalty.
You can pay for the variable Good Energy tariff by monthly or quarterly direct debit, cash or cheque. However, customers who pay by direct debit receive a £15 discount per fuel each year. This means dual fuel customers can receive a total of £30 discount per year when paying their Good Energy tariff by direct debit.
Good Energy Tariffs for EV Drivers
Did you know that there are specific Good Energy tariffs available exclusively to drivers of electric vehicles?
These tariffs allow EV drivers to bundle their home electricity and gas plans in a way that is also suitable for charging their EVs at a discounted price.
The names of the 2 Good Energy tariffs available for EV Drives are:
- Green Driver 7 Hour
- Green Driver 5 Hour
Both of these tariffs are time-of-use, fixed-rate tariffs. Rates are fixed for 2 years payable only by direct debit and have zero exit fees.
Therefore, customers who would like to sign up for this Good Energy tariff will need to have a standard credit meter or a Good Energy smart meter installed.
Good Energy Meter ReadingWith a smart meter you will no longer have to submit a Good Energy meter reading as the smart meter does it for you. Consider having a smart meter installed to allow you to access all of Good Energy's tariffs.
With the Green Driver tariffs, customers are given their choice between 5 or 7 hours during the day when rates are cheaper. This allows customers to charge their EVs during these hours to save money and reduce strain on the energy grid at peak times. For this reason, they are called time-of-use tariffs.
Good Energy Tariff for Generators
In previous years the company offered a Good Energy feed-in tariff. This tariff allowed home energy generators with solar and wind units to sign up and export energy back to the grid in exchange for cash.
The government-backed feed-in tariff programme closed in 2019 to new sign-ups, but the supplier has still continued to honour Good Energy Feed-in tariffs from before the closure.
Good Energy is currently working on a Smart Export Guarantee scheme that will allow home generators to sign up again for exporting energy back to the grid.
The Good Energy tariff for home generators is called: Generator Tariff
The Generator tariff is available for customers currently registered to the Good Energy feed-in tariff scheme and can be paid only by direct debit.
As with all other Good Energy tariffs, the generator tariff has no exit fees, so customers are free to leave at any time.
