Are you looking for information about Green Energy UK (GEUK) tariffs? You’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’ll take a look at the tariffs on offer, what they include, and the reasons for choosing each one. Keep on reading to get all the key details you’ll need in order to make your decision on which green energy supplier to select.

Green Energy UK tariffs: What are your choices?

If you're looking to compare Green Energy tariffs, you should be aware that the company offers two fixed price tariffs for domestic customers: EKOenergy and Tide. In this section, we’ll look at each one in more detail.

EKO Energy: Certified as 100% green

If having 100% green energy is important to you, then the EKO Energy tariff could be the best choice for you. The gas and electricity tariffs have been certified as eco-friendly and one of the most sustainable in the UK. Indeed, the EKO Energy tariff meets the strict criteria set out by EKOenergy, an ecolabel for electricity.

What is EKOenergy?EKOenergy is an initiative set up by the EKOenergy Network, which consists of more than 40 environmental organisations from around 30 countries. The non-for-profit group awards accreditation to energy companies - of which GEUK is one - that meet strict environmental criteria.

The criteria includes:

eko energy
  • Reliable tracking: The origin of the energy should be tracked in a thorough manner and ensure the energy generation process is green and sustainable from source to customer;
  • Sustainable generation: EKOenergy certifies electricity powered by wind and solar energy if produced outside of nature reserves and areas designated for the protection of birds, and biogas is only accepted if sourced from agriculture or forestry waste rather than energy crops;
  • Environmental projects: One of the key criteria is that accredited EKOenergy providers also fund projects to support the protection of the environment and habitats and contribute towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development goals. That is why EKOenergy suppliers pay at least 0.10 €/MWh into EKOenergy’s Climate Fund. Projects that GEUK are involved in include the safeguarding of marine habitats;
  • Auditing and verification: Once accredited, EKOenergy carries out audits and reviews on a regular basis, ensuring the tariffs meet the criteria.

GEUK’s EKO Energy tariff is a fixed-cost one, meaning that customers pay a fixed amount throughout the duration of the contract and prices do not change depending on the wholesale market. Customers can also choose to have just their electricity supplied or a dual package combining electricity and gas.

TIDE Tariff: Choose when you use your electricity

GEUK also offers a TIDE tariff, more commonly known as a time-of-use tariff, which may be of interest to customers who want to take advantage of times of the day when electricity is less in demand and prices are lower. People who own electric cars, for example, may be keen to consider this option to charge the car when electricity demand is at its lowest.

Choosing this type of tariff offers many advantages, including:

  • Taking control of your energy bill: the lowest electricity rates are available from midnight until 7am. In addition you can set your smart meter to control and modify your energy use to take advantage of low periods of demand and lower prices;
  • Manage your energy consumption in an intelligent manner: if you have high-energy needs, such as charging an electric car, then the TIDE tariff will allow you to manage your energy consumption in the best way possible;
  • Make a difference to the environment: just like the EKO Energy tariff seen earlier, choosing GEUK’s TIDE tariff will ensure you are doing your bit for the environment by supporting a 100% green electricity and gas provider.

Pricing for the TIDE tariff depends on the time of day you use electricity. Peak periods, or high tide as GEUK refers to it, is between 4pm and 8pm on weekdays.

Is Green Energy UK expensive?

While customers have praised GEUK for its work towards reversing climate change and protecting the environment, it has been commented on forums such as Trustpilot that the company is not the most competitive when it comes to pricing and is at the upper end of the pricing scale when comparing green energy providers in the UK. One customer, for example, said:

I signed up with this supplier in their very early days and have throughout found them responsive and reliable in their communications. They are not the cheapest, but when ethics drives one's choices, they are the best.

Trustpilot

So when it comes to making a decision on which tariff to choose, you should weigh up a number of factors including pricing, but also the positive impact you and GEUK will be having on the environment in the long term.

Who is Green Energy UK?

money and green bills

Established in 2001, it was the first energy provider in the UK to offer 100% green electricity and 100% biogas. As the world has become more conscious of the need to change our habits to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions, it is pretty remarkable that GEUK continues to be the only company that offers 100% biogas.

Based in the town of Hare, Wiltshire, as well as offering customers the chance to do their part for the environment by choosing green energy options, as a company, GEUK is also committed to doing its bit. Most staff either walk or cycle to work, and it is committed to various projects including:

  • Minimising our energy use;
  • Reducing plastic waste;
  • Recycling responsibly;
  • Working with organisations such as Rural England to contribute to the local community.

How does Green Energy UK source its energy?GEUK uses various ways to source its green energy offering. These include wind, solar, and hydro power. However, the company also uses anaerobic digestion - a process in which micro-organisms break down organic material - including cow waste - to produce methane and carbon dioxide-rich biogas.
